Balanced Scoring Leads Jets Past Falcons 88-48; Johnson Records First Double-Double of Season

WICHITA, Kan. – Scoring outburst and stifling defense helped the Newman University men's basketball team cruise easily past Kansas Christian Saturday afternoon (Dec. 15), 88-48. The Jets improve to 7-3 on the year, while the contest was treated as an exhibition for the visitors.

After going scoreless for the first 2:18 and falling behind 2-0 early in the contest, the Newman offense woke up quickly. Senior guard Christian DeYoung made his first start of the season one to remember, hitting three straight 3-pointers jetting Newman to a 13-2 run and a 13-2 lead. The Jets' defensive pressure caused tons of havoc, as the Falcons offense missed nine consecutive shots over an 11:40 span before ending the Jets 33-8 run.

Late in the first half, junior Juwan Davenport and sophomore Tyjil Hereford went on a 9-0 run extending the Jets lead to their largest lead of the half at 42-10. The Jets cruised to a 46-16 lead at the half.

The Jets held the Falcons to a frigged 18-percent shooting from the floor in the first half and 0-7 from behind the 3-point line.

The Jets came out of the halftime break with a 19-6 run extending the lead to 65-22 with 13:17 to play. The Falcons came storming right back with a 12-0 run, cutting the Newman lead down to 33 points, but was unable to get any closer.

The Jets rode the final 6:53 out cruising to an 88-48 victory, extending their win streak to three straight.

Sophomore big man DeAndre Johnson led the way for the Jets recording his first double-double of the season with 16 points, while pulling down 10 rebounds. Three others finished in double-digit scoring, Davenport ended with 15 points, DeYoung finished with 12 and Allen Wilson added in 11. Ben Ayre led the Jets with 10 assist.

Newman will conclude the first part of the regular season Monday evening (Dec. 17) against Avila. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
