LUBBOCK, Texas — A big second-half run made the difference as the Newman men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped with a 84-67 defeat at Lubbock Christian Thursday night in Heartland Conference action.
KEY SEQUENCE
A 3-pointer from Dametrius Walker with 13:28 left slashed the deficit to just five for the Jets (13-12, 9-5 Heartland) as they looked to keep things close against the Chaparrals (13-12, 9-5 Heartland). The hosts answered with a triple of their own though, and that started a 19-2 run that shot LCU out to a 68-46 lead with 6:57 to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Buckets from Kevin Bryant and Ben Ayre both tied things up early, and Tim Troussel added a layup to give Newman a 6-4 lead four minutes in. Another basket from Troussel again put the Jets in front, this time 8-7, and the junior buried a 3-pointer with 14:06 on the clock tied things up at 11-11.
-The Chaps scored the next six points to take the lead for good, going up by six at 22-16. Ayre notched a 3-pointer as the clock dipped under seven minutes in the opening half to cut that deficit in half, but LCU turned that into a double-digit lead with a triple and again with a bucket in the final 20 seconds of the half to make it 37-27 at the break.
-Lubbock Christian kept the lead above 10 for much of the second half, although Andre Sands cut it to nine with a pair of free throws two and half minutes in. Facing a 15-point hole, Walker hit a 3-pointer to start a 10-0 run, with Sands adding a layup and Damien Akao two free throws before Walker's trey that cut it to 49-44.
-The big run by the hosts opened up a 22-point lead, but the Jets began chipping away immediately. A couple free throws started it off, and Walker followed with a layup and another 3-pointer to get it back to within 15, but the Chaps scored the next five points to wrestle the momentum back.
NOTES
-While the Jets came in tied for first in the Heartland standings, the loss just made things tighter at the top. With two or three games remaining in the regular season for all teams, Arkansas-Fort Smith is alone at the top at 10-4, with Dallas Baptist a half-game back at 9-4 and Newman and LCU a game back at 9-5.
-Sands put up one of his best games of the season, netting 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Jets make the final road trip of the regular season on Wednesday, heading to Rogers State.
