EMPORIA, Kan. — Falling victim to a big inning, the Newman baseball team fell to No. 8 Emporia State Saturday afternoon in nonconference action.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (1-4) saw the Hornets (5-4) light up the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. ESU poked 13 hits in the frame to score 12 runs and quickly take control in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Jon Coufal led off the top of the second with a home run to dead center to get the Jets on the board. Aaron Mack followed with a one-out double, and scored on Tyler Push's single to center to make it 2-0 early for the guests.
-After the big inning for the Hornets, they tacked on another run in the fourth before Newman added a run with two outs in the sixth. Push was hit by a pitch, and scored on Easton Herring's double.
-Mack added to his RBI total in the eighth, following up a single from Paul Rupnik with a double to right to give Newman its fourth run of the game.
NOTES
-Mack posted his best game of the season, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, a run and an RBI.
