ODESSA, Texas — Forced to change travel plans quickly heading into the weekend, the Newman baseball team emerged with a pair of wins after facing off with the University of the Southwest and Texas-Permian Basin in a pair of doubleheaders.
The Jets (3-7) started the weekend off Saturday, falling against USW (10-6) 5-4 in the first game before rallying for an 11-6 victory in the second game.
Errors helped Newman build a 3-0 lead in the opener, but the Mustangs responded with three runs in the fourth to tie it up. A two-run double in the next inning gave USW the lead, and although the Jets pushed one across in the seventh, it wasn't enough to start the weekend off with a win.
The Jets bounced back in the nightcap, pushing three runs across in the top of the first on their way to never trailing in the contest. Aaron Mack's RBI double in the first scored the third run.
USW got two runs in the first and the third, managing to draw even at 4-4, but a triple from Mack scored Brian Canfield in the top of the fourth, giving Newman the lead for good. The Jets tacked on with a bases-loaded walk from Clay Druin in the fifth and a two-run single by Channing Williams in the sixth.
Starter Jacob Stramel tossed six innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out six.
The same pattern continued in the first game Sunday against the Falcons (2-9), as Zack Erdman went the distance on the mound to help the Jets pick up a 5-2 victory before suffering a 2-1 walk-off defeat in the final game of the weekend.
Erdman allowed a two-run double after a pair of singles in the bottom of the fourth, but allowed just three singles in the other six innings. The junior cruised most of the day, striking out three and walking none.
A bases-clearing double by Druin swung the game back in Newman's favor in the fifth, and scored on Canfield's sacrifice fly to make it 4-2. Easton Herring knocked in Will Jordan with a double in the next inning, as the Jets eased to the win.
The good pitching continued in the finale, as Samuel Hersh allowed just two hits through the first three innings. That allowed the Jets to hold a 1-0 lead after Williams drove in Turner Lace with a single in the third.
Garrett Hammond tossed the next 2 1/3 without allowing a hit, but UTPB was able to take advantage of an error to tie it in the sixth. A leadoff double for the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh wound up making the difference, as a hit in the next at-bat allowed the hosts to earn the win.
Williams posted a nice weekend at the plate, finishing 5-for-14 with four RBIs and a stolen base.
The Jets are back home at McCarthy Field, welcoming in Wayne State for a four-game series Saturday and Sunday.
