Jets Lose Two Tough Games to Heartland Foe Oklahoma Christian

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman baseball team lost two tough games in the series finale to Oklahoma Christian Saturday in game one the Jets fell 4-1 and in game two the Jets fell in a close game 8-6.

Game 1

 Key Sequence

The Jets (6-10) were looking at a three-run deficit going into the seventh inning trying to get back into the game but the Eagles (6-11) some late bullpen work to give themselves an opportunity for the win and closer Jake Collins was able to give the team the game one victory.

How It Happened

-In the top of the second, the Eagles were able to score early when infielder Collins scored on a Garrett Wages single through the left side of the infield giving Oklahoma Christian a 1-0 lead.

-In the top of the fourth, Oklahoma Christian added a run on a Brice Smith single to right field scoring Collins for the Eagles second run of the game.

-Newman would get on the board and cut the Eagle lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning outfielder Jake Hanson homered to right field it was now a one-run game.

-Oklahoma Christian would add on to their lead in the top of the fifth when Chad Kennedy and Drew Wright both scored on a Kolton Brown singled through the left side, the Eagles would go into the later innings up by three-runs and later get the game one victory.

Game 2

Key Sequence

The Jets (6-10) were able to cut the Eagles (8-6) lead to two going into the last two innings on singles by Clay Druin and Channing Williams, but the Eagles would go to the bullpen bringing in two of their later inning pitchers who would close the game and give the Eagles the game 2 victory and the series win.

How It Happened

-Oklahoma Christian was able to score early in the game starting it off with a Drew Wright single up the middle scoring Markwardt, the next hitter Chad Kennedy tripled to right center scoring Wright and a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Kennedy and giving the Eagles a three-run lead early.

-The Eagles would tack on another run when Markwardt was able to steal home on a delayed steal adding another run onto the Oklahoma Christian lead.

-In the bottom of the third, Newman was able to get on the board on a Brian Canfield sacrifice fly scoring Turner Lace, later Will Jordan got an RBI groundout to the shortstop scoring Paul Rupnik and the Eagle lead was 4-2.

-The Jets were able to cut it down to a one-run game in the bottom of the fourth on an Easton Herring ground ball which would score Aaron Mack it was now a 4-3 game.

-The Eagles made it a two-run lead in the top of the fifth, on a Markwardt single through the right side scoring Garrett Wages and getting the Eagle lead up to 5-3.

-Oklahoma Christian was able to add three more runs in the top of the sixth, first a Kennedy home run to left field, later a Wages single to left field would score Jake Collins and a Chandler Salinas double down the right-field line to score Wages, the Eagle lead was now 8-3.

-In the seventh the Jets would begin their comeback attempt, a Clay Druin single to right center would score Lace and Herring, later Williams would add another RBI to his total with a single through the left side scoring Druin and making it a two-run game, but with some help from the bullpen the Eagles would get the close game 2 victory Saturday afternoon.

Notes

-Clay Druin finished game two going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Turner Lace finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

-Channing Williams finished the weekend with six RBIs giving the infielder 21 on the season to lead the Jets.

The Jets are on the road in Claremore, Oklahoma to take on Rogers State March 16 and 17.
