DALLAS — Lauri Soome picked up a victory over the No. 7 singles player in the country as the Newman men's tennis team put together an incredible effort to top No. 36 Texas-Permian Basin Friday.
The Jets (7-8) earned their first win of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent, getting a big boost from Soome at No. 1 singles, where the freshman bested No. 7 Raul Stevens in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. That started a sweep of the top four singles spots, including straight-set wins by Lucas Norbiato and Blake Crawford, and a three-setter from Diego Rojo.
Newman got off to a good start against the Falcons (5-10) with two points in doubles.
The Jets have another big test in front of them Saturday, when they get back to Heartland Conference play against Dallas Baptist.
