LAWTON, Okla. — Capping their regular season with tough matchups against nationally-ranked opponents, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams fell to Cameron Tuesday afternoon.
The Jet men (9-12) fell behind after doubles, and ended up with a 7-2 defeat against the No. 47 Aggies (8-10). In singles action, Ajani King grabbed a three-set victory at No. 6, earning the 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win. At No. 3, Diego Rojo took the first set and won by retirement.
The Jet women (13-8) faced a tall task against the No. 19 Aggies (14-6), and kept things competitive at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but fell 9-0. Emily Young hung tight with her opponent at No. 4 singles.
Newman shifts to the postseason in a few short days, as both teams head to the Heartland Conference tournament at Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas Friday. The third-seeded men face St. Mary's at 8 a.m., while the fourth-seeded women take on the top-seeded Rattlers.
