ARLINGTON, Texas — Closing out the Heartland Conference season with the toughest matches of the season, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams each suffered a pair of tough losses to St. Mary's and St. Edward's Friday and Saturday.
The Jet men (9-10, 2-2 Heartland) came into the weekend unbeaten in conference play, but started off with a tough 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Rattlers (11-5, 2-0 Heartland). Enrique Coiras led his match at No. 6 singles when the match was decided.
Saturday against the Hilltoppers (16-9, 2-0 Heartland) Diego Rojo and Blake Crawford turned in straight-set victories in singles, but the Jets fell 5-2.
Newman has secured the No. 3 seed in the Heartland Conference tournament, which begins April 20 back at Arlington Tennis Center.
The Jet women (13-7, 1-3 Heartland) suffered a 9-0 defeat against No. 9 St. Mary's (13-3, 2-0 Heartland) on Friday. They got off to a good start with a win from Kateryna Stoianova and Vlada Litvinova at No. 2 doubles Saturday against the Hilltoppers (20-3, 2-0 Heartland), and Mariana Gaviria won a three-set match at No. 6 singles, but the Jets fell 6-2.
Newman will be the No. 4 seed at the conference championships.
