WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman volleyball team lost to Park University in three straight sets Wednesday night at the Fugate Gymnasium in non-conference play 25-14, 25-16 and 25-13. The Jets fall to 1-12 on the season and 0-6 at home this season.
Newman struck first in set one before Park rallied to take a 3-1 lead. Park would take full control in the set scoring the final nine points, claiming the opening set 25-14. Cassie Pauls lead the Jets with three kills in the first set.
The Jets came out in the second set taking an early 3-0 lead, thanks to a service ace from Alissa Flint and kill by Pauls. The Pirates stormed back, matching the score for the first time in the second frame, 3-3. Back-and-forth play from the squads produced six lead changes and nine ties in the second set. After the Pirates took the lead back 16-15, they would not look back finishing the set on a 10-1 run, nine of those being straight points winning 25-16.
Newman would tie the third set up at one a piece before the Pirates went on a four point run to go up 5-1. The Jets would burn a quick timeout, before the Pirates would grasp the lead and never look back winning the match, 25-13.
Pauls led the Jets with 10 kills, while Reagen Roth led the way with 14 assists, 12 digs and swung a .333 in the match.
The Jets will return to conference play Tuesday (Sept. 25) when they travel to Souther Nazarene in Bethany, OK. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
