WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Men's Basketball team jumped ahead early and never looked back Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) defeating Texas A&M International 65-52. The Jets move to 13-5 on the year and improve to 4-2 in the Heartland while the Dustdevils fall to 5-10 on the year and move to 2-2 in conference play.
Allen Wilson paced the Jets out to a quick 7-0 start scoring the Jets first five points through the first 2:26 into the contest. After a pair of Dustdevils free throws cut the Newman lead to 9-5 with 12:26 to play, Christian Davenport drilled his lone triple sparking a 9-0 run pushing the Jets out to an 18-15 lead just under the 10-minute mark of the half.
Late in the first half, guard Ben Ayre jumped the Jets out to their largest lead of the half, 37-21 after scoring 11-straight points for the Jets in a duration of 2:48. The Jets headed into the locker rooms leading 39-26 after a strong offensive half.
Christian DeYoung sparked the Jets out to their largest lead of the game, 43-26, scoring five straight points to open the second half. Just before the midway point in the second half, the Dustdevils cut the Jets lead down to single digits, 48-42 after an 8-0 run.
Under 10-minutes to play in the contest the Jets jumped back out to a double-digit lead, 53-43 with 7:09 after a 5-1 run. The Dustdevils would not go away cutting the lead back down to six, 53-47 with 5:16 to play until Wilson continued his season high day knocking down back-to-back three-point daggers coasting the Jets to a 65-52 win.
Ben Ayre and Allen Wilson led the Jets in scoring with 13 points. Juwan Davenport added in 11 points off the bench in 23 minutes. DeAndre Johnson finished just shy of a double-double recording 8 points and 8 rebounds.
The Jets will conclude their homestead next Saturday (Jan. 26) against Dallas Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan.
