WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman women's basketball team blew past Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) 89-38 inside the Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets improve to 12-5 on the year and improve to 3-0 in the Heartland Conference for the first time since the 2011-2012 season. The Dustdevils of Texas A&M International drop to 0-15 on the year and fall to 0-3 in the Heartland.
In the opening quarter early ball movement along with solid defensive pressure helped the Jets open the flood gates in the opening quarter. Braxtyn Stewart hit one of the Jets three, opening quarter triples sparking a 5-0 opening run. After the Dustdevils cut the lead back down to single digits, the Jets responded back with solid ball movement leading to easy buckets inside the paint. The Jets closed the first quarter with an 11-1 run taking a 24-4 lead into the second.
Despite taking the Jets 1:44 to score in the second quarter, junior guard, Kaitlyn Potter and sophomore Haley Albers got the outside shooting going drilling back-to-back trey's sparking the lead out to 31-9 just before the midway point of the quarter. Offense continued to come easy for the Jets as Bria DeGrate went on a 5-0 run of her own extending the Newman lead to 36-11 with 3:36 to play in the half. The Jets outside shooting continued to stay scorching hot after three straight triples from Potter, Albers and Makayla Hayes helped close the second quarter on a 13-4 run. The Jets headed into the locker rooms in front 49-16.
The Jets' offense cooled down to start the third quarter shooting just 6-of-15 from the field in the quarter. The shooting woes however did not hurt the offense as the Jets closed the quarter on an 8-2 extending their lead out to 67-22.
Despite the huge advantage on the scoreboard the Newman offense continued attacking the Dustdevils defense getting to the free throw line seven times in the quarter. Mireya Saldana provided some strong minutes off the bench scoring all five of her points in the final period.
The Jets finished with four players scoring in double figures led by Bria DeGrate and Haley Albers scoring 17 points apiece. Kailtyn Potter finished the game with ten points reaching double-digit scoring for the sixth time in the last seven games. Makayla Hayes finished with a career high 10 points in just
The Jets will conclude their three game homestead Thursday evening (Jan. 24) against Oklahoma Christian. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside the Fugate Gymnasium.
