LUBBOCK, Texas – Chances escaped the Newman women's basketball team Thursday night as the Jets dropped a heartbreaking 66-58 loss at Lubbock Christian. The Jets fall to 12-8 on the year and drop to 3-3 in the Heartland Conference while the Chaparrals move to 17-4 on the year and improve to 7-0 in the Heartland Conference.
After the Jets netted the game's opening points, the Chaparrals responded back with an 8-0 run taking a 9-3 lead with 6:03 to play in the opening quarter. Strong defensive pressure out of the media timeout led to easy offensive for the Jets as Braxtyn Stewart drilled the lone triple of the first half giving Newman the lead back, 10-9 with 2:51 to play. The Chaparrals however would close the quarter on a 5-0 run in the final 1:28 regaining the lead, 14-12.
Despite trailing to begin the second quarter, Newman continued to attack the basket as Faith Mason-Vestal and Abbey George combined to score the first six-points of the quarter putting the Jets back out in front 18-14. LCU would regain the lead just under the midway point of the quarter with a 4-0 run. The Chaparrals used another late quarter run ending the first half with a 6-0 run taking a 27-24 lead into the halftime break.
After falling behind by seven points in the opening two minutes of the third quarter, the Newman offense caught fire from behind the three-point line as Kaitlyn Potter drilled back-to-back triples cutting the Chaparrals lead down to 39-37 with 2:08 to play in the third. The Jets would tie the game back up with 25-seconds to go after an A. George layup and a pair of Mason-Vestal free throws made it 41-41. The Jets would head into the final quarter trailing 43-41 as the Chaparrals closed the quarter with another late second shot.
Lubbock Christian seized the momentum in the first five-minutes of the final frame scoring the first six points, until sophomore Haley Albers connected on her first three-pointer of the game ending the LCU 8-0 run, 49-44. After trailing 53-46 with 3:37 to play freshman, Mireya Saldana continued to give the Jets life completing a three-point play cutting the deficit to 53-49. The Jets continued to attack the rim, but the upset bid would fall short after shooting a rough 8-of-15 from the free throw line in the final quarter.
The Jets finished with three players in double-digit scoring led by Kaitlyn Potter's 12 points, while Abbey George and Haley Albers each added in 11 points.
The Jets will continue their four game road trip on Saturday (Feb. 2) against Oklahoma Christian. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. inside the Barn in Oklahoma, City, Okla.
