ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – On Thursday night, the Jets traveled to take on the Griffons of Missouri Western. In the final regular season match for the Jets, Missouri Western would come out on top of Newman 3-1. This game would conclude the Jets inaugural season in the MIAA.
In the first set, both teams would exchange points with neither team gaining much of an advantage. With the Jets trailing 20-15, Missouri Western was able to put away the Jets ending the set on a 5-2 run. Missouri Western would win the first set by a score of 25-17 and take a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, The Griffons would jump out to an early lead. The Jets were able to make a comeback from trailing by as many as 6 points to tie the score at 16. With the score tied 16-16, the back and forth battle continued. Missouri Western would eventually be able to outlast the Jets and win the second set by a score of 25-23 and lead the match 2-0.
In the third set, the Jets were looking to extend their season and force a fourth set. With the Jets trailing 20-15, Newman would go on a 7-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. The teams would then exchange points until the Jets would complete the exciting comeback and win the third set by a score of 27-25 and cut into the Griffons deficit, 2-1.
In the fourth and final set, the Jets would fall back into their old ways of struggling to slow down opposing offenses. After battling back from down 14-9, the Jets were able to score four straight points to get the score to 14-13. Both teams would go back and forth for the next three points before the Griffons would go on a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 20-15. Newman would score the next point before the Griffons would go on a 5-1 run to shut the door on the Jets 25-17 and take the match 3-1.
