Jets fall just short in their comeback against the Rangers

WICHITA, Kan. - The Jets hosted the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon. Newman came into this game looking to rebound from a 15 point loss last Saturday to East Central. The Rangers came into this afternoons matchup looking to bounce back from a 39 point loss to Emporia State. 

In the first quarter, the Jets came out firing on all cylinders. After NWOSU got the scoring started, Bratxyn Stewart answered with a three to give the Jets the lead. The Rangers would be able to build a 15-9 lead with just 2:34 remaining in the quarter. Newman would close out the quarter on a 11-0 run behind 3 threes from Stewart and a layup by Abbey George, to take a 20-15 lead.

The second quarter struggles would happen for the Jets for the second game in a row. After only scoring 3 points last Saturday in the second quarter, Newman scored just 8 this afternoon. A free throw from McKenzie Brown would tie the game up at 21-21 with 5:18 left in the half. Brooke Haney would answer a rangers three with one of her own to tie the game back up at 24 a piece. Brown would make a jumper to give the Jets the lead back, 26-24. The Rangers would be able to tie the game back up before a George layup would give Newman back the lead with 45 second left. However, the Rangers would answer with a three to take the lead into the half, 29-28.

After a NWOSU layup extended the lead to 3, Haley Albers was able to tie it up with a three just 30 seconds in. The Rangers would go on a 9-0 run to build their lead to 40-31. Both teams would go scoreless for the next three minutes before Amoni White would get a layup to cut into the Rangers lead. However, the Rangers would answer back with a three to give them the biggest lead of the game for either team, 10. Kaitlyn Potter would score a layup and get fouled. She would make her free throw to get the Rangers lead back down to 7. Both teams would go scoreless again for nearly 2 minutes before NWOSU was able to get a layup to make the score 45-36. Haley Albers would answer with a three to cut the lead back down to 6. The Rangers would score four straight to build their lead back up to double digits. Albers would hit another three to get the lead back down to 7, but NWOSU would answer with a three of their own to get it back to 10 points, 52-42 to end the quarter. 

The fourth quarter would be the best for the Jets scoring wise as they would put up 24 points. Stewart would get things going again for the Jets as she hits a three just 40 seconds into the quarter. Brown would make two free throws to cut the lead down to 5 points. George would cut into the lead even more as she makes a layup to make the score 52-49 and force the Rangers coach to use a timeout.The Rangers would come out of the time out and put an end to the Jets 7-0 and extend their lead back to 6 with a three pointer from Kenzi Lamer. NWOSU would make a layup to build their lead back up to 8, 57-49. Lamer would hit another three to give the Rangers their largest lead of the game, 11 points as they led 60-49 with just over 6 minutes left in the game. Potter would respond with a three of her own to make the score 60-52.

Bailey Hawkins would score the Jets next 6 points, however the Rangers would respond to each bucket with one of their own. Back to back threes and a layup from Potter would cut the lead down to 1 as the Jets went on a 17-7 run to make the score 67-66 with 45 seconds left. The Jets would have an opportunity to take the lead slip through their fingers as Mackenzie Brown's inbounds pass would go through the hands of a wide open George underneath the basket giving the Rangers the ball back with 3 seconds left. The Rangers would make a free throw to get the lead to two with 1 second left in the game as they would take down the Jets 68-66. 

The Jets will be back in action Monday, November 18 as they travel to Edmond, Okla. to take on Oklahoma Christian at 5:30 P.M.
