TOPEKA, Kan. – In the final day of the Washburn Thanksgiving Classic this afternoon, the Jets took on the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State. Newman came into this afternoon's matchup looking to bounce back from their 78-72 loss to Truman State. While SWOSU was looking for their second win of the tournament after beating Washburn in the first game, 84-73.
In the first half, the Jets would struggle early to get their offense started. The Bulldogs would start the scoring with the first 4 points of the game with a jumper and 2 free throws to take an early 4-0 lead. It wasn't until 16:38 left in the first half when
David Javorsky would make a jumper to score the first Newman points. Javorsky would make another jumper to tie the game 4-4 with 15:55 left in the first half. With the score 9-8 in favor of the Bulldogs, SWOSU would go on a 17-6 run to give them a 26-14 lead with 8:59 left in the first half.
Omar Boone would stop the run with a jumper to cut the deficit to 10, 26-16. With 7:29 left in the half, Javorsky would make a 3 point basket to cut the deficit down to 7, 28-21. SWOSU would extend the lead back to 9 with a jumper to make the score 30-21 with 6:12 left in the half. Javorsky would cut the deficit to 6 with another 3 pointer to make the score 30-24 with 5:27 left in the half. Both teams would then trade points before SWOSU would go on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 13, 39-26 with 2:57 left in the half.
Marshawn Blackmon would stop their run with a dunk. SWOSU would score the next basket and Newman would respond with a layup by Blackmon to make the score 41-30 with 1:56 left in the half. To end the half, the Jets would go on an 8-2 run, cutting the Bulldogs lead to 45-38 at halftime.
In the second half, both teams came out shooting the ball with both team trading buckets early. A Blackmon 3 would cut the deficit to 4, 47-43 with 18:57 left in the half. With the Jets still trailing by 4,
Dawson Gunter would make a 3 to make the deficit 1 point, 51-50, with 17:07 left in the half. Neither team would be able to pull away from the other until the 10:19 mark when SWOSU would go on a 7-0 to extend their lead to 72-64.
Blackmon would once again stop the Bulldog run with a jumper. The Jets would cut the deficit to 5 thanks to a free throw by Javorsky to make the score 72-67 with 7:49 left in the contest. With 6:13 left in the game, the Jets would cut the deficit to 3 with a fastbreak basket from
Tyjil Hereford making the score 74-71 with 6:13 left in the game. SWOSU would then go on a 5-0 run to make the score 79-71 with 4:53 left in regulation. Newman would cut into the deficit with a free throw from
Kaleb Allison, 79-73. SWOSU would go on another 5-0 run to extend the lead back to 11 with 2:28 left in the game. The Jets kept fighting but SWOSU was too much for the Jets, winning 92-83.
Newman was led by
Marshawn Blackmon with 28 points and 15 rebounds, this would be his fourth double-double of the season.
David Javorsky would 22 points while
Kaleb Allison added 8.
The Jets will be back Thursday, December 5
th, as they travel to Tahlequah, Okla. to take on Northeastern State in the first MIAA conference matchup of the season starting at 7:30 P.M.
