WICHITA, Kan. - The Newman women's basketball team opened up play this afternoon as they hosted the Clarion Inn Central Region Challenge. They faced off with the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist for the second game of the day. The Jets would trail for most of the match before taking the lead in the final seconds of the match to secure the win.
After a back and forth first quarter that ended with a 17-15 score in favor of the Tigers. The Jets would trail for the entire second quarter. At one point, Newman was behind 24-15 before they went on a run to bring the score to 24-19. Ouachita Baptist would go on a 9-4 run to close out the quarter making the half time score 33-23.Â
In the third quarter, the Tigers were able to extend their lead to as much as 12 points. In the final four and a half minutes of the quarter only one point would be scored, a free throw by
Madison Birnbaum. The Tigers would take the lead going into in the fourth quarter, 42-33.Â
The fourth quarter would be a different story for the Jets. Even though, the Tigers would be able to extend their lead back to 12 in this quarter, Newman would be able to figure out their scoring woes.
Kaitlyn Potter would sub in with 7:30 left to go in the fourth quarter and provide a boost to the team. Potter was able to score 9 of her 16 points in the final quarter. The Jets were able to hold the Tigers to 11 points in the final quarter while they were able to score 22 themselves. Newman held Ouachita Baptist to one point in the final 5:30 minutes of the game.Â
Senior,
Kaitlyn Potter would be the only Jet to get into double figures. Nine Newman players were able to get into the score column tonight, with Birnbaum contributing 9 points,
Abbey George and
Bailey Hawkins both added 8. Three Jets all had 5 rebounds each Potter,
Michaela Mack and
Madison Birnbaum. Mack would also lead the team in assist with 4.
The Jets will be back in action tomorrow at noon as they take on the Tigers of East Central University in their second game of the Clarion Inn Central Region Challenge.
