Newman Men's Basketball set to battle Northeastern State Thursday to open MIAA play

LAST TIME OUT
Southwestern Oklahoma State would go on a 17-6 run to take a 26-14 lead with just under half of the first period left to play. Newman would be able to fight back into it in the first half going on an 8-2 run to close out the half making the score 45-38 heading into the break. In the second half, the Jets would be able to get the deficit down to one behind threes from Marshawn Blackmon and Dawson Gunter. SWOSU would pull away again as they would score seven unanswered points making the score, 72-64. A Tyjil Hereford layup would cut the deficit back to three, 74-71, with just over six minutes left to play. SWOSU would go on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to eleven with just over two minutes left to play and would ultimately prove to be too much for the Jets as the Bulldogs would win 92-83. Marshawn Blackmon led the way for the Jets with 28 points and 15 rebounds.

THE COACHES
RJ Allen is in his third season as the head coach and ninth on the staff for the Jets. Allen is 4-3 in his third season at Newman. Allen has led Newman to a 34-23 overall record and a 21-11 Heartland Conference record over his first two seasons. Allen won Heartland Conference Coach of the Year honors in the 2017-18 season, he was the first coach to win the award in their first season. Prior to Newman Allen spent 5 season as an assistant coach at Concordia Universtiy in St. Paul, Minn. This will be Allen's first matchup with Northeastern State.
Mark Downey is 6-1 in his first year at the helm of the Riverhawks.

ABOUT THE JETS
Newman is 4-3 on the season, 0-0 in their first season in the MIAA. Of qualifying players, Newman has three averaging double figures led by Marshawn Blackmon with 17.3 points per game. Blackmon is also leading the team in rebounding at 9.6 rebounds per game. 

ABOUT THE RIVERHAWKS
Northeastern State is 6-1 on the season, 0-0 in the MIAA. The Riverhawks have two players averaging double figures led by 
Caleb Smith at 15.4 points per game. 

SERIES HISTORY
This will be just the third meeting between the two teams and first in over 7 years. Both of the previous two meetings came in the 2011-12 season with Newman winning the first matchup 47-46 and Northeastern winning the second one 71-48. With both teams now being in the MIAA Conference the teams will start facing each other at least once a year.

LAST TIME VS NORTHEASTERN STATE
After trailing by as many as ten points in the first half, Newman was able to pull within one basket late in the half. The Riverhwaks would score nine unanswered to extend their lead back to ten before the Jets would score the final four points of the quarter to go into the half trailing, 32-26. It wouldn't take NSU long to build their lead back to double digits in the second half as they caught fire from long range to extend their lead to 45-32 with 14:15 left in the contest. Newman would pull to within nine, 49-40, with just over half of the final period left to play. However, the Riverhawks would finish out the game on a 22- 8 run to finish off the Jets, 71-48. Eric Saunders led the Jets with 12 points in the contest, the only Jet to have double figures in any category.

UP NEXT
The Jets will continue their road trip in Oklahoma as they head to Claremore, Okla. to take on Rogers State in the second MIAA Conference matchup of the season. Both Newman and Rogers State moved to the MIAA Conference this season after the Heartland Conference joined with the Lone Star Conference this season.
