Jets Offense Struggles in Home-Opener as Rattlers Take Both

WICHITA, Kan. – Runs were hard to come by for the Newman softball team in their home opener on Thursday (Feb. 28) as the Jets dropped a doubleheader to St. Mary's 3-1 and 2-1. The Jets fall to 2-7 on the year and 1-3 in the Heartland, while the Rattlers improved to 13-6 on the year and 4-0 in conference play.

Game 1

After a leadoff Lauren Kuhrt single to begin the game, the Newman offense went cold managing just two hits through the next five innings. The Rattlers broke the scoreless streak with a three-run third inning taking a 3-0 lead.

After being held scoreless through six-innings junior, Lacey Colvin sparked life into the Newman offense sending a towering solo shot over the center field fences for her third homerun on the young season trimming the Rattlers lead to 3-1. However the Jets' comeback attempt fell short as the Jets were unable to get another base runner in the seventh dropping the first game 3-1.

Chantel Purcella (1-2) got the start on the bump for the Jets in game one. After allowing three runs in the second inning one of which coming via a walk, Purcella settled down pitching five straight scoreless innings.

Game 2:

Looking to salvage a doubleheader split, Lacey Colvin got the scoring started sending a moonshot over the left field fences connecting on her fourth homerun over the season and second of the day giving Newman the early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, it was the only hit of six by the Jets to produce a run in a 2-1 loss to the Rangers.

Newman threatened in the sixth as the Jets were unable to strike with 1-out leaving the bases loaded to end the inning. After falling behind 2-1 in the top of the seventh the Jets would get one last chance after a 2-out pitch hit double by Paige Wallace gave Newman life. Bailey Bugner reached first on Rattlers fielding error, however Wallace was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run on the play as the rally fell inches short.

Dominique Payne (1-3) pitched a brilliant performance allowing just two runs on three hits over 7-innings. Payne recorded a strikeout in the performance, while allowing six walks in the loss.

The Jets will travel down south to Austin, Texas for a doubleheader against St. Edward's on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 2). First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with the second game scheduled to follow at approx. 2:00 p.m.
