Stanford's Two-Hit Day Not Enough in Series Finale

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman University softball team squandered a 2-1 lead Saturday afternoon (Mar. 16) as Lubbock Christian rallied back with four straight runs, completing a series sweep over the Jets 5-2. The Jets fall to 4-15 on the season and 2-10 in conference play.

The Jets got off to a strong start as lead-off slap hitter Lauren Kurht roped a single down the left field line. After Kurht swiped second and third, Lacey Colvin drove in her 13th RBI of the season jumping the Jets out to a 1-0 lead.

After the Chaparrals evened the game 1-1 in the top of the third, Katherine Stanford led the bottom half of the inning with one of her two singles. Stanford swiped second and third bases setting up the Jets second strong scoring chance of the game. Kurht jumped the Jets back in front 2-1 with an RBI groundout to short.

Starting Pitcher Bailey Bugner looked to be in a rhythm after setting down the first two Chaparral hitters, however LCU thought otherwise drawing a two-out walk before hitting a go-ahead two-run homer to center. The Chaps continued the two-out rally with a single followed by an RBI triple down the right field line, gaining a 4-2 lead. The Chaps would tack an insurance run in the fifth, 5-2.

Stanford recorded half of the Jets hits with a 2-for-2 performance at the dish.

After taking a 2-1 lead in the third inning, the Jets' offense was mute managing just one hit and one baserunner over the final four innings.

The Jets will continue the homestead with a pair of non-conference games on Tuesday (Mar. 19) against Bethany College. First-pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. from the NU Softball Field in Wichita, Kan.
