Jets Sweep the Swedes Ending Six Game Skid

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman University softball team completed their first sweep of the season Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 20) with 7-4 and 8-0 wins over Bethany College. The Jets improve to 6-15 on the season ending a six game skid.

GAME 1

The Jets put game one away early with runs in every inning, but the second. Emma Eck picked up her lone RBI of the game on an opposite field single to right center in the first, driving home Paige Wallace. Lacey Colvin would tack on the second run of the inning after Emma Eck swiped second, advancing home on the throw. In the second inning, Colvin knocked in one of her games two RBI's on a single.

The Swedes plated their first run of the game on a solo-shot by Ciera Flores trimming the Newman lead 3-1. In the bottom half of the fourth, Shanda Cox smashed her second homerun of the season driving in Kameron Pope stretching the NU lead, 5-1.

The Jets gave the Swedes life in the top of the sixth after a defensive miscue led to three Bethany runs cutting the Newman lead to 6-4. Newman got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a Colvin sacrifice fly scoring Katherine Stanford.

Senior, Chantel Purcella (3-3) got the nod in the circle for the first game pitching five-innings allowing one run on five hits, while striking out three. Dominique Payne pitched two-innings in relief allowing three runs on three hits.

GAME 2

The second game started to look like a pitchers dual until the Newman offense caught firing scoring in the final three innings.

Slap hitter, Katherine Stanford got the scoring started in the third, driving a pair in on an opposite field single to left field scoring Shanda Cox and Bailey Horsch jumping the Jets out to a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning the Jets broke open the game scoring three runs, two of which coming on RBI's from Bailey Horsch and Lauren Kuhrt.

Newman kept the foot on the peddle pushing across three more runs in the fifth, winning the contest 8-0 via run rule.

Dominique Payne (2-6) started in the circle for the Jets pitching four-innings allowing no runs on two hits, walking five and striking out two. Bailey Bugner pitched a perfect inning in relief striking out one.

The Jets will wrap up their four game homestead Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 20) against Southwest Baptist in non-conference action. First pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from the NU Softball Field in Wichita, Kan.
