WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday (Mar. 30) falling in game one 7-1 and 8-0 in the nightcap. The Jets drop to 8-22 on the year and 2-17 in the Heartland.
GAME 1
Oklahoma Christian jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just one batter into the contest after one of four costly errors.
After scoreless second and third innings, OC stretched their lead out to 4-0 with three runs in the fourth. Lauren Kuhrt sparked a Jets two-out rally in the home half of the fourth lacing a triple into the left field corner. One batter later, slap hitter Katherine Stanford delivered Newman's first run of the contest scoring Kuhrt on a single to right field.
The Eagles would pad onto their lead with a run in the fourth, five and sixth cruising to a 7-1 victory in the opening game of the series.
Bailey Bugner (2-6) surrendered five runs (2-earned) on nine hits, walking one in the losing decision.
Kuhrt led the Jets bats with a 2-for-3 performance with a triple, stolen base and run scored in the loss.
GAME 2
Trailing 3-0 heading into the home half of the fourth, Shanda Cox recorded the first of three Newman hits but was stranded on second base after swiping a bag with one out.
The Eagles would put the game away scoring a run in the fifth and striking for a pair in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Emma Eck, Jamee Compton and Cox each recorded a hit in the loss.
The Jets will look to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon Sunday (Mar. 31). First pitch between the Jets and Eagles is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from the Maize Senior High Field in Maize, Kan.
