PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Newman baseball team came back from an early 6-2 deficit to take down their nonconference opponent Pittsburg State in 11 innings. The Jets use this victory as momentum as they face a conference opponent in an early nonconference matchup in a weekend three game series.
Coming out of the bottom of the sixth inning the Jets were looking at a 6-2 deficit as the game was coming to an end but the team wasn't going away at all. Daniel Blake got the team started with a home run to left field, Later bringing up Chris Opolka who singled up the middle and would steal second the Jets were working with a lot of momentum right now. Turner Lace came up worked the count and was hit by a pitch, Koby Millner moved Opolka top third bringing up Paul Rupnik who singled to left center scoring Opolka and moved Lace to third cutting the Gorillas lead to just two.
Later in the seventh inning Dalton Dinkel came up and singled to center field scoring both Lace and Rupnik on an error by the center fielder, the game was now tied at six. The Jets were able to get a strong pitching performance by their bullpen in the later portion of the game from Sam Hersh, Skyler White and Garret Hammond as they kept the Gorillas scoreless for the final three innings.
In the 11th the game still tied the Jets were able to get something started and capitalize on the momentum, Blake got things started with a single to right field binging up Jon Coufal who was a pinch hitter who would come up big with a single through the right side putting runners at first and second and later loading the bases with a Opolka walk. Turner Lace was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game in a big spot scoring Push who pinch ran, the Jets now had the lead for the first time in the game. Matt Reeves pinch hit for Millner and worked a walk scoring Coufal and the Jets were looking at a 8-6 lead and with a close out from pitcher Garrett Hammond the Jets would take the wild game victory.
Chris Opolka went three for four while Dinkel went two for five but had three RBIs in the victory.
Garret Hammond gave the Jets a big game out of the pen going 3 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
The Jets return home Friday and Saturday (Mar. 8&9) as they welcome Rogers State to McCarthy Field for a nonconference matchup beginning at 2 p.m.
