Jets Fall in Opening Round of Heartland Conference Tournament - NCAA National Basketball Tournament Hopes in Hands of the Committee

TULSA, Okla. — Junior forward, Marshawn Blackmon and senior guard Dametrius Walker combined for 32 of the 61 points, but that wasn't enough for the No. 4 seed Jets as the No. 5 seed Rogers State Hillcats pulled away late for an 70-61 win on Friday afternoon (Mar. 8) in the opening round of the Heartland Conference Tournament.

The loss dropped the Jets to 20-9 on the season, snapping the two game winning streak as the Jets await Selection Sunday (Mar. 10).

A back-and-forth contest for much of the first half was the storyline, until the Hillcats jumped out to their largest lead of the game 31-21 with 5:52 to play in the first half. After being held without a field goal for nearly three-minutes, Marshawn Blackmon helped the Jets, close the first half on 8-2 run trimming the RSU lead to 33-29 at the half.

Blackmon helped the Jets regain the lead through the first five and a half minutes of the second half, scoring six of the first 12-points during a 12-3 Newman run. Guard, Tyjil Hereford stretched the Jets out to their largest lead of the game 47-43 with a running floater in the lane with 9:38 to play, until the Hillcats put the game away with a 12-4 run to close the game. The Hillcats stretched the final margin at nine with a layup late.

Marshawn Blackmon led the way for the Jets finishing with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Blackmon posted his fourth straight and 20th double-digit scoring performance of the season. Dametrius Walker was the only other Jet to finish in double-digit scoring finishing with 10 points in 23 minutes.

The Jets will hope and pray that no team outside of the top-8 South-Central Regional Rankings will get upset and hopefully will have some more games to play in the NCAA National Tournament.

The 2019 NCAA Tournament Selection Show will be broadcasted live on NCAA.com this Sunday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
