LAREDO, Texas — After splitting in their nonconference midweek game the Newman Softball team traveled to Texas to take on Texas A&M International for a conference matchup. The Jets would drop two close games to the Dustdevils looking to get back in the swing of things with a win on Saturday.
Game 1
In the first game after the Dustdevils took an early 2-0 lead the Jets were able to cut into that lead in the top of the fourth as they got a single form Lauryn Ogden bringing up Jamee Compton who singled and scored Ogden cutting the lead to 2-1.
Both teams were held scoreless until the final inning when the Jets were able to tie the game on two big homeruns by Bailey Bugner and Emma Eck tying the game at three going into the bottom half of the inning. The Jets were looking to get the final zero and bring the game into extra innings but a late home run for Texas A&M's Contreras gave the Dustdevils the game 1 victory.
Game 2
In the second game, the Jets jumped out to an early 2-0 on a Lauren Kurht single and stolen base a long with a an error by the pitcher, in the second inning the Jets were able to get started with a Shanda Cox single to center field and stolen base, bringing up Compton who single to right field scoring Cox. The team was also able to hold the Dustdevils scoreless going into the third inning.
The Dustdevils got a walk, stole base and a single to get two runs and tie the game at two. Texas A&M would get a big run in the bottom of the fourth as they got started with a bunt single and a single to right field for their third run of the game for the 3-2 lead late in the game. The Jets came up just short in their fight late in the game dropping game two 3-2.
Leadoff hitter Lauren Kurht went 4-for-4 in the game two loss, while Shanda Cox added a 2-for-3 game to the resume for the Jets.
The Jets conclude their series with the Dustdevils Saturday with first pitch coming at 11 a.m.
