LORADO, Texas. – The Newman University baseball team saw its bats stymied by the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon (Apr. 5). TAMIU took the opening contest in nine innings, 1-0. The Dustdevils finished the sweep of the Jets with an 11-2 route in the nightcap.
GAME 1
The Jets had a handful of chances on offense, having baserunners in each of the first seven innings. But the Jets bats were unable to deliver the key knocks stranding nine baserunners in the loss. TAMIU rattled off eight hits in the win, including the lone run of the game on a solo-shot homerun in the home half of the ninth.
Ryan Boaz got the start for the Jets, throwing eight scoreless innings allowing seven hits, two walks and punching out two Dustdevils while allowing just two baserunners to reach third base in the outing. Jacob Stramel (0-2) took the loss after pitching 0.1-innings striking out a batter before surrendering the lone run of the game on solo-shot homerun.
Tyler Push reached base three times going 1-for-2, drawing two walks, while swiping a bag in the defeat. Chris Opolka was the lone Jet to record an extra base hit for the Jets finishing 2-for-4.
GAME 2
The winning momentum of the Dustdevils from game one, carried over into game two against Newman as TAMIU scored an 11-2 win to sweep the doubleheader.
TAMIU notched runs in the first, second, third innings to take a 3-0 lead over the Jets.
The Newman bats were unable to get hot, recording only five hits in the second game.
Newman's first run came in the fourth inning as Mitchell Austin sparked a two-out rally with a single to left field. One batter later Kyle Koch delivered an RBI double to center field driving home Austin trimming the deficit to 3-1.
The Dustdevils would put the game out of reach with four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Derek Schumann (2-2) got the nod in game two working 4.1-innings allowing six runs (4-earned), three walks and striking one out.
Austin and Koch recorded four of the Jets five hits while both driving in a run.
The Jets will look to salvage the series finale tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 5) against the Dustdevils with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
