Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Arkansas-Fort Smith

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman split a doubleheader with Heartland Conference foe Arkansas-Fort Smith Friday evening (May 5) beginning their final series of the season. The Jets won the opener 3-1, before falling to the Lions in the nightcap, 9-3.

GAME 1
Derek Schumann pitched his first complete game of the season Friday night, guiding the Jets to a series opening, 3-1 victory. The right hander surrendered just one run on five hits, while fanning eight UAFS batters.

Trailing 1-0 after the opening frame, the Jets responded in the home half of the second coming on a two-out double from Kolby Millner scoring the tying run, Chris Opolka.

In the fifth inning, Jake Hanson and Turner Lace gave the Jets a 3-1 lead recording back-to-back RBI's after a costly UAFS error.

Schumann ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth. After retiring the first tow batters of the inning, he surrendered a hit-by-pitch and single before halting the Lions threat with an inning ending groundout.

Kolby Millner led the Jets offense in game one going 3-for-3 at the dish. Millner recorded a double and drove in a run in the effort. Tyler Push finished 2-for-4 while scoring a run.

GAME 2
In game two, the Newman bats were quite only managing two base hits against Lions starter Korbin Polly who worked eight shutout innings, while striking out 10.

The Lions broke the game open scoring a pair in the fourth and tacking on three more in the fifth, before putting the game out of reach with two in the seventh and eighth innings.

Will Jordan broke up the shutout in the ninth delivering a double to right center bringing home Paul Rupnik. The Jets would add two more in the final frame as Kyle Koch and Chris Opolka each drove in a run.

Tyler Push recorded his fifth straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance extending his hitting streak to six straight games. Will Jordan extended his hitting streak to seven straight with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish, driving in one and scoring once.

Starting pitcher, Ryan Boaz (3-3) worked 5.0-innings allowing five runs (3-earned) on eight hits and recording six punch outs in the loss.

Newman will close the season tomorrow afternoon (May. 4) in the rubber game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from McCarthy Field.
