WICHITA, Kan. - The Jet's came into tonight looking to right the ship and earn their first win and conference win. This was the sixth matchup between Newman and Missouri Southern State and the first since 2015. Newman had won the last two matchups between the now conference foes. A streak that would be broken tonight.
In the first set, the Jets were able to get out of the gates fast and jump to a 5-2 lead. MSSU would eventually come back to take the lead 8-7 before Newman went on a 5-0 run to make their lead 13-8. The Jets never looked back from there as they were able to hold off the Lions surge and win the set 25-20.Â
The second set started out with both teams going back and forth. The Lions were able to string together multiple points at a time. While the Jets struggled to get back to back points, until they were faced with a set point. At 24-16, Newman was able to put a scare into MSSU scoring three straight to make it 24-19 and put the pressure on before the Lions were able to secure the set. Tying up the match 1-1.
In the third set, it was all Lions to start. They were able to jump to a quick 10-0. Newman was able to put a run together scoring five straight points to make the score 13-9 before the Lions started to pull away again. Missouri Southern State would go on a 12-4 run to win this set 25-13.
The fourth set would be dominated by the Lions early as the Jets struggled to get anything going until they were already behind 19-11. At this point Newman was able to turn the boosters on and score six straight points to make the score 19-17 in favor of the Lions. From this point on it would be neck and neck the rest of the way. Missouri Southern State would be able to hold on to the late lead and finish the Jets off 25-22.Â
