Jets snap losing streak with 76-64 victory over Rogers State

WICHITA, Kan. – On Wednesday night, the Newman Jets hosted the Rogers State Hillcats in an MIAA Conference matchup inside Fugate Gymnasium. Newman led from the opening tip to the final buzzer in this one as they would defeat the Hillcats 76-64.

Newman would dominate the first half outscoring Rogers State (2-15, 0-8) 42-25, thanks to their outside shooting. The Jets went 7-14 from 3 point range in the first half. The Jets bench came up big in this game outscoring the Hillcats 61-28.

In the fourth quarter, the Jets would get their largest lead of the game at 23 points two different times with baskets by Faith Mason-Vestal with 9:04 left and 7:58 left. Later in the quarter, th Hillcats would cut the deficit to single digits with 2:16 left, 65-59. The Jets would be able to put the game away late, outscoring the Hillcats 11-5 in the final two minutes to secure the 76-64 victory.


The Jets shot 24-of-61 for 39.3 percent from the floor, 8-of-23 for 34.8 percent from three and 20-of-23 for 87 percent from the free throw line.  Newman (8-9, 3-5) held Rogers State to 23-of-62 for 37.1 percent from the field and 9-of-26 for 34.6 percent from three. Newman out-rebounded the Hillcats by 9, 41-32, with 13 coming on the offensive end. 

Kaitlyn Potter led the Jets in scoring for the sixth game in a row as she scored 27 points. Abbey George added 14 and 8 rebounds as Madison Birnbaum just missed a double-double with 9 points and 14 rebounds in the Jets win.

Newman will be back in action Saturday, January 18th as they host Northeastern State with tip-off coming at 1:30 P.M.
