WICHITA, Kan. – On Saturday afternoon, the Newman Jets hosted Northeastern State looking to get their second win of the week in a MIAA Conference matchup inside Fugate Gymnasium. Newman led from the opening tip to the final buzzer in this one as they would defeat the Riverhawks 59-53.
Newman would start the game on a 7-0 run to get an early lead. The Jets would dominate the first half outscoring Northeastern State (4-12, 2-7) 28-19, thanks to their outside shooting. The Jets went 3-5 from 3 point range in the first half compared to Northeastern State's 1-11. Newman in the first half, shot 12-24 from the field to help contribute to the 9 point lead at the break. The Jets bench also outscoring the Riverhawks 34-21.
In the fourth quarter, the Jets would have their largest lead of the game at 16 points thanks to a basket by
Abbey George with 9:22 left. The Riverhawks were able to make things interesting in the fourth quarter. They would outscore the Jets 26-18 in the final quarter. NSU would cut the deficit to five points with 1:01 remaining, but Newman was able to hold the lead and get the 59-53 win over the Northeastern State. The Jets bench outscored the Riverhawks 34-21.
The Jets shot 25-of-50 for 50 percent from the floor, 4-of-15 for 26.7 percent from three and 5-of-8 for 62.5 percent from the free throw line. Newman (9-9, 4-5) held Northeastern State to 21-of-58 for 36.2 percent from the field and 8-of-24 for 33.3 percent from three. Newman out-rebounded the Riverhawks by 11, 38-27, with 9 coming on the offensive end.
Abbey George led the Jets in scoring with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
Kaitlyn Potter added 14 and 7 rebounds and
Bailey Hawkins had 12 points and 5 rebounds in the Jets win.
