EMPORIA, Kan. – On Wednesday evening, the Newman Jets traveled to Emporia State to take on the Hornets, while trying to keep their win streak alive. Emporia State had other plans as they knocked down 18 threes to take down the Jets 93-64.
Newman would fall behind early in the game as Emporia State (13-4, 6-2) would go 6-9 from three in the first quarter to take a 29-16 lead after one quarter of play. Emporia State would start the second quarter on a 6-0 run with two 3 point baskets to gain their largest lead of the half at 19 points. In the third quarter, Newman was able to cut the deficit to 13 points with 6:40 left in the quarter thanks to a basket by
Bailey Hawkins. Every time Newman would go on a run to get back in the game Emporia State would answer with a three point basket. Emporia State would be able to hold in the fourth and beat the Jets 93-64.
The Jets shot 22-of-55 for 40 percent from the floor, 8-of-29 for 27.6 percent from three and 12-of-16 for 75 percent from the free throw line. Newman (9-10, 4-6) held Emporia State to 32-of-68 for 47.1 percent from the field and 18-of-37 for 48.6 percent from three. Newman out-rebounded the Riverhawks by 3, 38-35, with 12 coming on the offensive end.
Braxtyn Stewart was the only Jet in double figures with 10 points, she added 5 rebounds.
Faith Mason-Vestal was they Jets second highest scorer with 9 points, while
Abbey George added 8 points and 8 rebounds in the Jets loss.
Newman will be back in action as they take on Washburn University Saturday, January 25
th with tip-off slated for 1:00 P.M.
