Topeka, Kan. – On Saturday afternoon, the Newman Jets traveled to Topeka, Kan. to take on the Washburn Ichabods. The Ichabods were able to knock off the Jets 70-53 behind 11 made threes, the second game in a row the Jets have given up double-digit made three point baskets.
For the second game in a row, Newman would fall behind early as Washburn (10-8, 4-5) would go 4-9 from three in the first quarter to take an early 22-10 lead over the Jets. In the second quarter, Newman would outscore Washburn 16-13, behind 7 points from sophomore forward
Faith Mason-Vestal. The Jets trailed by 9 points going into the intermission, 35-26.
In the second half, Newman would continue to battle but Washburn would have an answer for every basket the Jets would make. At the end of the third quarter, the Ichabods still maintained a 9 point lead, 51-42. In the fourth quarter, Newman was able to cut the deficit to 7 with 9:43 left, after two
Brooke Haney free throws. After those free throws by Haney, Washburn would continue to control the game and defeat the Jets 70-53.
The Jets (9-11, 4-7) shot 17-of-42 for 40.5 percent from the floor, 3-of-16 for 18.8 percent from three and 16-of-21 for 76.2 percent from the free throw line. Washburn shot 25-of-61 for 41 percent from the field and 11-of-25 for 44 percent from three. Newman was out-rebounded by Washburn by 4, 34-30.
Faith Mason-Vestal led the Jets in scoring for the first time this season with 15 points and 3 rebounds.
Amoni White was the second leading scorer for the Jets, adding 12 points in the Jets loss.
Newman will be back in action as they return home for a conference matchup against Northwest Missouri State Thursday, January 30
th with tip-off slated for 5:30 P.M.
