Topeka, Kan. - The Newman Jets traveled to Topeka, Kan. to take on the Washburn Ichabods. A second half surge by Washburn would down the Jets, as the Ichabods would pull away to win 80-67.
In the first half, Washburn (11-7, 6-3) would start the game on a 9-0 run to gain the early advantage. A jumper by
David Javorsky would stop the Ichabods run. For most of the first half, Newman trailed until 1:04 left when
Juwan Davenport made a jumper to tie the game at 32. Washburn would make a basket with 29 seconds left to take a 34-32 lead going into halftime.
With the Ichabods holding a 1 point lead 47-46, Washburn would go on a 12-2 run to gain a 11 point advantage with 8:46 left in the half. A three point basket by
Allen Wilson would cut the deficit back to single digits at 8 points, 59-51. Washburn would respond with another 12-4 run to go up by 16 points with 3:54 left to play. Washburn would gain their largest lead of the day at 18 points with a 3 point basket by Tyler Geiman with just over a minute left to play.
Newman (8-12, 2-9) shot 22-of-50 from the floor for 44 percent, 6-of-20 from three for 30 percent and 17-of-26 from the free throw line for 65.4 percent. While Washburn shot 26-of-52 for 50 percent, and 8-of-21 from 3 for 38.1 percent. The Jets were out-rebounded by the Ichabods by 7, 34-27, with Newman pulling in 9 on the offensive end.
Newman was led in scoring by
Marshawn Blackmon with 20 points and 8 rebounds.
David Javorsky added 12 points in the Jets loss.
Newman will return home for a conference matchup against #2 Northwest Missouri State on Thursday, Jan. 30
th with tip-off set for 7:30 P.M.
