WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Jets hosted Lincoln University in a MIAA Conference matchup Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium. Newman led from the opening tip to the final buzzer in this one as they would defeat the Blue Tigers 82-46.
Newman would dominate the first half outscoring Lincoln (3-9, 0-3) 42-20, thanks to their outside shooting. The Jets went 7-12 from 3 point range in the first half. The Jets defense was also going this afternoon as they forced 26 Blue Tiger turnovers that led to 14 points.
In the third quarter, the Jets would pull away from the Blue Tigers outscoring them 30-11 in the quarter, their second 30 point quarter of the season. Newman would get their biggest lead of the afternoon as a 3 point basket by
Kaitlyn Potter took the lead to 41, 72-31. Newman matched the 41 point lead twice in the fourth quarter as well.
The Jets shot 27-of-58 for 46 percent from the floor, 11-of-22 for 50 percent from three and 17-of-20 for 85 percent from the free throw line. Newman (7-6, 2-2) held Lincoln to 20-of-58 for 34 percent from the field and 1-of-8 for 12 percent from three. Newman out-rebounded the Blue Tigers by 10, 40-30, with 9 coming on the offensive end.
Kaitlyn Potter led the Jets in scoring with 17 points. With Potter's five three point baskets made today, she is at 149 career 3 pointers just one shy of tying
Brianna Caldwell's, 2012-16, 150 in just two seasons.
Braxtyn Stewart added 15 points and 6 rebounds in the win.
Newman (7-6, 2-2) will be back in action Monday January 6
th as they host Central Missouri with tip-off at 5:30 P.M.
