Jets Upset Bid of Kansas State Comes Up Short, 63-59

WICHITA, Kan. – On Friday night, the Lady Jets hosted Big 12 powerhouse Kansas State looking to gain some experience while competing against a Division 1 school inside Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets would come up just short of an upset as Kansas State would close them out in the final minute, 63-59.

The Wildcats would start the game on a 5-0 run with.  A jumper by Faith Mason-Vestal would end the run to make the score 5-2 with 7:41 left in the first quarter.  The Jets would tie the game thirty seconds later on a three point basket by Haley Albers. After a K-State layup made the score 7-5, the Jets would go on a 9-2 run to gain a 14-9 lead with 3 minutes left in the opening period. The Wildcats would respond as they would end the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead the Jets 15-14 after the first quarter.

After getting the score all squared at 17, the Wildcats would go on an 11-0 run to jump out to a 28-17 lead with 4:30 left in the half. Both teams would get a basket and the Jets would make a free throw to make the score 30-20 in favor of Kansas State at the Half.

The Jets would start the third quarter by going on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to three points 33-30 just three minutes into the second half.  Kansas State would respond with six quick points before Newman would put together a 9-4 run to get the deficit back to three points with 1:47 left in the quarter. The Jets were able to get it as close as two points in the quarter before K-State would hit a three to close out the quarter and take a five point advantage into the final period, 47-42. 

Sydney Nilles would make a couple of free throws to open up the fourth quarter and the Jets would take their first lead since the first quarter on a Brook Haney three point basket that gave the Jets the lead 51-49 with 4:41 left in the fourth quarter. With Newman up one, the Wildcats would go on a 5-0 run to give themselves a four point lead with 2:45 left.  On the next two possessions, Haney would make a jumper and Abbey George a free throw to make the score 56-55 in favor of the Wildcats with 1:44 left. With a one point lead, Kansas State would make a three point basket to go up four points with 51 seconds left, 61-57. Nilles would answer with a layup to make the score 61-59 with 30 seconds left.  The wildcats would make a couple free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the game as Kansas State would survive upset minded Newman 63-59.  The Jets were able to outscore the wildcats in the second half 39-33.

The Jets (1-1, 1-1) shot 19-of-52 for 36.5 percent from the floor, 9-of-22 from three for 40.9 percent and 12-19 for 63.2 percent from the free throw line. While Kansas State shot 24-74 for 32.4 percent from the field and 5-33 for 15.2 percent from three. Newman was out-rebounded by the Wildcats by 11, 51-40, with five coming on the offensive end for the Jets. 

Haley Albers led the Jets in scoring with 15 points and 2 rebounds.  Brooke Haney added 14 points and 4 rebounds in the Jets loss

Newman (1-1, 1-1) will hit the road as they travel to Emporia, Kansas to take on Emporia State on Thursday, Dec. 3rd, 2020 with tip-off at 5:30 PM.
