Lady Jets Lose a Close One to the Lopers

WICHITA, Kan. – On Thursday night, the Lady Jets returned home looking to build off their win at Washburn on Saturday as they hosted Nebraska Kearney inside Fugate Gymnasium.  This game turned into a defensive battle from start to finish but unfortunately for the Jets they were unable to defeat the Lopers as they would fall 53-47.

Nebraska Kearney (3-0, 3-0) would get the scoring going with a three point basket to gain the early advantage.  The teams would go back and forth exchanging baskets with one another and with the Jets leading 12-10, the Lopers would score the final three points to gain a one point lead going into the second quarter.  In the second quarter, both teams continued to exchange baskets as we would head to the intermission with the score all square at 24-24.

The Lopers would start the second half going on a 7-0 run to gain a 31-24 lead.  After the Jets were able to cut into the Lopers lead numerous times in the quarter, Nebraska Kearney would end the third quarter on a 5-0 run taking a 41-33 lead into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Jets were able to cut the deficit down to three points with 1:59 left, 48-45.  The Jets had opportunities to tie the game late, but the shots didn't fall and with a few free throws by Nebraska Kearney, the Lopers would leave Wichita 53-47 victory over the Jets.

The Jets shot 19-50 for 38.0 percent from the floor, 2-13 for 15.4 percent from three and 7-10 for 70.0 percent from the free throw line.  Newman (2-3, 2-3) held Nebraska Kearney to 19-48 for 39.6 percent from the field and 6-21 for 28.6 percent from three. Newman was out-rebounded by the Lopers by 8, 36-28, with 5 coming on the offensive end. 

Faith Mason-Vestal led the Jets in scoring with 14 points and 3 rebounds.  Makayla Hayes added 10 points and 1 rebounds in the Jets loss

Newman (2-3, 2-3) will continue their homestand Saturday, December 12th as they host Fort Hays State with tip-off coming at 1:30 P.M.
