ROSE HILL, Kan. - The Jets home opener had to be moved to nearby Rose Hill High School due to snow from storms this past week. Newman would strike first, but Illinois Springfield would have back to back innings with grand slams on their way to a 17-2 victory over the Jets.
Neither team would be able to score until the bottom of the third when the Jets would strike for two after one out singles by
Hayden VanDePol and
Tyler Push single would get the scoring threat started for the Jets.
Devin Beard would hit a ground ball to short stop that would get Push out at second base, a throwing error by the second baseman would allow Beard to reach safely and VanDePol to score.
Will Jordan would be hit by a pitch and
Dalton Dinkel would walk to load the bases with two outs for
Mitchell Austin. Austin would draw a walk to bring in the Jets second run, before
Jon Coufal would strikeout swinging leaving the bases loaded.
The Prairie Stars would answer back in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead after a three run homerun by Pettigrew. After that, it would be all Prairie Stars as they would get back to back 7 run innings hitting a grand slam in each to take a 17-2 lead after 7 innings.
Neither team would score for the final two innings as UIS would defeat Newman 17-2.
Push and Dinkel would both go 1 for 2 with a walk and Austin would go 0 for 0 with 3 walks and an RBI.
The Jets and Prairie Stars will play two more games tomorrow Sunday, February 16th at Rose Hill High School with first pitch set for 11 am with the second game to follow.
