ALVA, Okla.- The Newman softball team traveled to Northwestern Oklahoma State for a game that was originally scheduled to be played in Wichita, but after a rain out of the games to be played in Alva a week ago both teams agreed to move today's games down south and reschedule the games in Wichita later on in the season. Newman would fall in the first game 11-5, but would bounce back in game two of the doubleheader for an 11-1 run rule.
In game one, Northwestern would get the scoring started in the bottom of the first plating two runs. Newman would respond in the top of the second by taking a 3-2 lead after
Emma Eck would be driven in by a one out double from
Londin Fiorella.
Jaleigh Conkle would hit a single to right field and would advance to second on the throw as the outfielder tried to throw out Fiorella at third.
Sierra Spurlock would drive in Fiorella with a single to left field, moving Conkle to third.
Lauren Kuhrt would reach on a fielders choice that would score Conkle for the final run of the inning.
The Rangers would answer right back with 4 runs of their own to take a 7-3 lead heading to the third inning. The Jets would answer right back though as
Lacey Colvin would reach safely on an error by the second baseman.
Bailey Bugner would hit a single through the left side to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Lauryn Ogden would walk to load the bases up for Eck, who would walk to bring in Colvin. After a lineout from Fiorella for the first out, Conkle would drive a ball through the right side for an RBI single to bring in Bugner. The Rangers would then get a fly out and a groundout to end the inning. Newman would hold NWOSU scoreless in the bottom of the third and the Rangers would do the same to the Jets in the fourth. After that, it would be all Rangers as they would score one run in the bottom of the fifth and four in the bottom of the sixth while holding the Jets scoreless from the fourth inning on for an 11-5 victory.
The Jets would have three players have a multihit game, Conkle 2 for 3, Fiorella 2 for 4 and Spurlock 2 for 4.
In the second game of the day, the Jets would turn things around. With help from her defense who make 14 of the 15 outs in the game,
Anna Veltien would toss her first collegiate no hitter. Veltien would finish the day going 5 innings giving up no hits, no walks and one unearned run. The only runner to reach base for the Rangers in the game was on a throwing error by third basemen
Shanda Cox. Despite, the defense losing the perfect game, they were a big reason to why the no hitter happened as Veltien only had one strikeout. This means her defense recorded 14 of the 15 outs in the game for her, 10 flyouts and 4 groundouts.
Newman would put up six runs in the first inning on five hits, with all six runs being scored with two outs. The Jets would get three more runs in the top of the third inning. The first two batters of the inning would reach safely and Katherin Stanford would move them over to second and third with a groundout. After a strikeout would give the Rangers their second out of the inning, the Jets would get to work again.
Lauren Kuhrt would single up the middle to drive in Conkle and Eck, advancing to third on a throwing error by the centerfielder.
Shanda Cox would get an RBI bunt single that would bring in Kuhrt to make the score 9-0 heading into the home half of the third. Newman would get thier final two runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a
Bailey Bugner solo homerun and a bases loaded RBI single to left by Spurlock that would drive in Eck.
Behind the Jets stellar defense, Newman was able to secure its first win of the season 11-1.
The Jets had four players with 4 hits in the game, Bugner 2 for 3, Conkle 2 for 2, Cox 2 for 3 and Spurlock 2 for 3.
The Jets will be back in action February 19 as they host Friends University in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 pm.
