Game Recap: Softball |

Jets complete the sweep of the Falcons

WICHITA, Kan. - The Newman softball team returned home for a non-conference matchup against neighboring, Friends University.  The Jets were able to run-rule Friends in the first game 8-0 in six innings.  The Jets finished off the doubleheader with a 7-6 walk-off win.

In game one, the Jets started the game plating three runs in the bottom of the first with a Bailey Bugner RBI single and an Emma Eck 2 RBI double.  The Jets would continue the scoring, plating two more runs in the bottom of the second to give the Jets a 5-0 lead.  The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when Eck drove another run in on a sacrifice fly to give the Jets a 6-0 lead.  The Jets would finish the game scoring two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the Jets an 8-0 win in game one.  Anna Veltien continued her momentum as she pitched six innings giving up only three hits with two strikeouts.

The Jets would have two players have a multihit game, Bugner 3 for 4, and Lauren Kuhrt 2 for 4.

In the second game of the day, the Jets continued to score runs as Newman would plate three runs in the bottom of the first with a bunt single by Cox and a 2 run homerun by Lacey Colvin to give the Jets an early 3-0 lead.  Friends would respond as they would get on the board with a single to left field cutting the deficit to 3-1.  The Falcons would add another run on a single to left, but fortunately for the Jets they were able to throw the batter out at second as she tried to stretch her hit to a double.  In the bottom half of the third, Newman would respond as Bugner ripped a two run homerun to centerfield giving the Jets a 5-2 lead.  The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth as the Jets would add to their score thanks to a pass ball scoring L. Kuhrt to give the Jets a 6-2 lead.

The seventh inning would get interesting for the Jets as Friends would start the inning with a homerun by Davis to cut the Jets lead down to 6-3.  Then, back to back walks forced Bugner out of the game, with the Jets bringing in Anna Veltien.  Friends would then get a single to centerfield to load up the bases.  The Falcons would get a bases loaded single that would bring in one run and another single that would bring in 2 runs to tie up the game at 6 going into the bottom of the seventh.  In the bottom of the seventh, Newman would get a runner on thanks to an error by the Falcon third basemen.  Then a sacrifice bunt by Eck moved Londin Fiorella to second base with one out.  Bringing Jaleigh Conkle to the plate, Conkle would smack a single through the right side that would score Fiorella giving the Jets the 7-6 walk-off win and the sweep of the Falcons.

Shanda Cox lead the Jets in hitting with two hits in game two.

The Jets will be back in action February 22 as they travel to Kansas City, Mo. to take on Rockhurst University in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 P.M.
