Jets struggle down the stretch, fall to the Tigers 79-72

Hays, Kan. - The Newman Jets traveled to Hays, Kansas to take on the Fort Hays State Tigers looking to snap their losing streak.  Unfortunately for the Jets, they were unable to finish down the stretch and fell to Fort Hays State 79-72.

In the first half, Newman would start the game on a 7-0 run to gain the early lead.  Newman would control the game for the next ten minutes until Fort Hays State would take the lead with 8:37 left, 19-18.  With the game tied at 19, Fort Hays State (10-11, 3-9 MIAA) would go on a 10-3 run to gain a 7 point advantage with 5:06 left in the first half, 29-22.  Newman would try to cut into the deficit before the half, but Fort Hays State would take a 6 point lead into the intermission.

In the second half, Newman would claw their way back into the game after trailing by 8 points, to tie the game at 52 with 11:07 left.  For the next few minutes, both teams would trade baskets back and forth.  With the game tied at 63 with 6:02 left, Newman struggled to keep the offense going as they were outscored 16-9 in the final six minutes and would fall to Fort Hays State 79-72.

Newman (8-15, 2-12) shot 25-of-54 from the floor for 46.3 percent, 7-of-18 from three for 38.9 percent and 15-of-26 from the free throw line for 57.7 percent. While Fort Hays State shot 29-of-57 for 50.9 percent, and 9-of-23 from 3 for 39.1 percent. The Jets out-rebounded the Tigers by 13, 40-27.

Newman was led in scoring by Marshawn Blackmon with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Juwan Davenport added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the Jets loss.

Newman will return to action Saturday, Feb. 8th as they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on Nebraska- Kearney with tip-off slated for 4:00 P.M.
