Jets defeat RiverHawks in final game before MIAA indefinitely suspends all sports

WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Jets hosted Northeastern State for a MIAA Conference matchup on a nice, beautiful March afternoon.  The Jets were able to hold off the Riverhawks 6-5 after losing a 5-0 lead to get their second conference win and first at home in the MIAA era.

Newman would get the scoring started in the bottom of the first after a single by Devin Beard and single by Will Jordan brought Dalton Dinkel to the plate.  Dinkel would single to left field and with an error by the left fielder that would score Beard to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Mitchell Austin would be the next batter for the Jets and would double to right field scoring Jordan, giving the Jets a 2-0 lead after the first inning.  The Jets would add another run in the third with a single up the middle by Kyle Koch giving the Jets a 3-0 lead.  The Jets would add to their lead by scoring two more times in the fourth with an RBI double by Jordan and an RBI single by Dinkel that would give the Jets a 5-0 lead.

As we hit the fifth inning, Northeastern would come out swinging as they would score five runs in the inning to tie the game.  Northeastern would score three runs on double down the left field line and they would cap it off with a two run homerun to right field.  The score would remain 5-5 until the bottom of the seventh inning, after Dinkel would hit a double to left, Austin would come up to the plate and hit a pitch to right field scoring Dinkel to give the Jets a 6-5 lead.  The Jets were able to shut down the Riverhawks in the final two innings to hold on for the 6-5 win.

Newman would get 13 hits on the day led by Dalton Dinkel and Mitchell Austin.  Dinkel would go 3 for 5 with a double and a RBI.  Austin would go 3 for 4 with three doubles and 2 RBI's.

For now, this will be the Jets final game until further notice as the NCAA has cancelled all spring championships and the MIAA has indefinitely suspended all sports for all of its member institutions.
