EDMOND, Okla. – The Newman baseball team finished their first MIAA Conference series on Satruday and Sunday afternoon against Central Oklahoma. Unfortunately for the Jets, they wouldn't be able to avoid the big innings by the Bronchos. In the Saturday's game, they would give up four runs in the second and 5 in the third to fall behind big early. In the second game, they would give up a four run sixth and a four run seventh to the Bronchos who would take game 2 11-3 and game 3 14-5 over the Jets.
In game 1, Newman would jump out to a 2 run lead after the first inning.
Tyler Push and
Devin Beard would both start the game off with a walk,
Will Jordan would reach on a fielder's choice that would get Push out at third. With runners on first and second,
Mitchell Austin would come up with a single to right field that would score Beard and move Jordan to third.
Hayden VanDePol would hit a sac fly to score Jordan for Newman's second run. The Bronchos would answer back with a run of their own in the bottom half.
Newman would start the second inning off just like the first with back to back walks from
Kyle Koch and
Max Bajza. The next two batters for Newman would get out bringing Beard back to the plate where he would get his second walk of the game to load the bases with two outs for Jordan. During Jordan's at bat, the UCO pitcher would throw a wild pitch advancing the runners, Koch would score. The Bronchos would then respond with a 4 run inning in the bottom of the second and a 5 run inning in the bottom of the third to open up a 10-3 lead. Neither team would score again until the bottom of the seventh inning when Central Oklahoma would manufacture a two out run. The Bronchos would take game two 11-3 to even up the series 1-1 after Newman run ruled them the game before.
In game 2,
Kyle Koch would get the scoring started for the Jets as he would crush a homerun to right centerfield to give the Jets an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Newman would add another run in the second after a
Chris Opolka single scored Reeves to give the Jets a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the second. Central Oklahoma would respond adding three runs in the bottom of the second inning to give the Bronchos their first lead of the contest, 3-2. Newman would tie the game in the top of the third inning with an RBI groundout by Koch. Central Oklahoma then score two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a homerun and an RBI double to take a 5-3 lead. Central Oklahoma would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded walk putting them up 6-3 lead. In the next half inning,
Hayden VanDePol came up to the plate with a man on and smacked a 2 run homerun to cut the deficit to one, 6-5.
From this point on, the game took a turn for the worse for the Jets as Central Oklahoma would score four runs in the sixth inning on a Grand Slam by Laurence, the first of two homeruns that he would hit on the day, would give the Bronchos a 10-5 lead. The Bronchos would add four more runs in the seventh thanks to a three run homerun by Laurence and an RBI single giving the Bronchos a 14-5 lead.
This would end up to be the final score in the contest as Newman and Central Oklahoma would go scoreless in the 8
th and Newman in the 9
th to give the Bronchos the win and the series against the Jets 2-1.
Newman would tally 7 hits in game 3, with seven players tallying a hit. VanDePol and Koch each had 2 RBI's and a homerun.
The Jets will be back on the diamond Tuesday March 3
rd as they take on Southern Nazarene at home with first pitch slated for 3:00 PM.
