Jets split doubleheader with Riverhawks to pick up their first MIAA Conference win

WICHITA, Kan. – On Saturday afternoon, the Newman Jets played host to the Northeastern State Riverhawks to continue MIAA play.  The Jets would fall in game 1, 11-0, but were able to salvage the doubleheader with a 4-3 win in game 2 to get their first conference win as a member of the MIAA Conference.

In game one, Northeastern would score first as they would get one run across with an RBI single through the left side to take the early 1-0 advantage.  Things would remain 1-0 in favor of the Riverhawks until the top of the fourth inning, when Northeastern State would plate four runs to extend their lead to 5-0.  The Riverhawks would bring two more runs across in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to take a commanding 11-0 lead.

The Jets would have five players with a hit in this game.

In game two, Newman would look to even the doubleheader with a win.  Newman would strike first in the bottom of the second after an error by the Northeastern shortstop, Darissa Buenrostro would smack a ball into the right center gap scoring both Katherine Stanford and Sierra Spurlock to give the Jets the early 2-0 lead.  The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the fourth as Northeastern State would cut the Jets lead to 1 after a solo homerun by Schuler to make the score 2-1.

The Riverhawks would eventually tie the game in the top of the fifth as Northeastern State would score before a runner was tagged out to end the inning making the score 2-2.  Newman would respond scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  It first started with a Lacey Colvin fielder's choice where they would fail to get Paige Wallace out at second, Lauren Kuhrt would score to make the score 3-2.  The Jets would get the other run on a RBI single from Emma Eck down the left field line to score Colvin giving the Jets a 2 run lead, 4-2.

Northeastern State wouldn't go away as they would get a run in the top of the sixth on another solo homerun by Schuler, cutting the Jets lead to 4-3.  The Riverhawks made it interesting in the seventh, but the Jets were able to pick up the win, their first conference win in the MIAA era.

Lauren Kuhrt would lead the Jets in hitting with two hits and a run scored in the Jets win.

Newman will be back in action Tuesday, March 10 as they finish their homestand against Sterling College with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 3:00 PM.
