Jets unable to avoid the sweep against #2 Central Missouri

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman hosted its first ever MIAA Conference series this weekend when #2 Central Missouri came to town. The Jets would be in the first two games, but were unable to avoid big innings as UCM would blow things open in both games with 5 run innings. In game three, it was all Mules as they put up their third 5 run inning of the weekend in the first inning and never looked back. UCM would win game one 17-9, game two 14-11 and game three 16-2.
 
In game one, Central Missouri would put up 1 run in the first and Newman would answer right back with 4 of their own. Tyler Push would start the inning off by reaching on an error by the Mules shortstop.  Devin Beard would come up with a single down the right field line advancing Push to third. Will Jordan would come up next, he would hit a single through the left side for 2 RBI's. After Jordan would be caught stealing, the Jets would go single by Mitchell Austin, double by Dalton Dinkel and double by Hayden VanDePol. Austin would score on Dinkel's hit, Dinkel would score from third on a passed ball to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Jets after 1 inning.
 
After being held scoreless in the second inning, the Mules offense would explode in the third, fourth and fifth as they would score 2 runs, 5 runs and 4 runs in the innings. Newman would score 1 run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Dinkel that would score Austin. UCM would answer right back with another run in the top of the sixth to make the score 13-5. NU would get another run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Koch that would score Dinkel. Central Missouri would score 2 runs in each of the final two innings. Newman would get two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a Devin Beard 2 run homerun and a run in the bottom of the ninth when Koch would drive in Dinkel again, this time with a single.
 
Dalton Dinkel would go 3 for 4 with two doubles, a walk, 3 runs scored and two RBI's.
 
In game 2, UCM would get things going in the first again. This time they would come away with three runs in the inning. They would put up a run in each of the next two innings to take a 5-0 advantage after three innings. Newman would get 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the Mules lead 5-3. VanDePol, Koch and Jon Coufal would each have RBI's in the inning.
 
In the fifth, both teams would score two runs. UCM would hit a two run homerun in the top half of the inning and NU would get their runs on an RBI triple by Beard and a sac fly from Jordan. A double and a triple in the top half of the sixth would allow the Mules to push another run across making the score 8-5 in favor of UCM. The Jets offense would get hot in the bottom half of the inning as they would plate 5 runs to take a 10-8 lead. A leadoff homerun from Coufal would spark the inning for the Jets where they would have their first 5 batters reach base safely on their way to batting all the way around. The Mules however, would respond with a 5 run inning of their own to take the lead back 13-10. Newman would get another in the bottom of the seventh on a Jordan RBI single. UCM would get their final run in the top of the ninth to make the score 14-11.
 
Dinkel would go 4 for 5 and Beard would go 3 for 5 to lead the way for the Jets in the game.
 
In game 3, UCM would have two 5 run innings and a 4 run inning on their way to a 16-2 seven inning run rule over the Jets to complete the series sweep. Newman would get a run in the bottom of the third when Beard would hit an RBI double to that would score Coufal. Newman's final run would come in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Reeves would hit an RBI double to left field that would score Daniel Blake.
 
Devin Beard would go 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Jets in the final game of the weekend.
 
Newman will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10 as they travel to Southern Nazarene for a non-conference matchup with first pitch coming at 2:00 pm.
