WICHITA, Kan. – On Saturday afternoon, the Jets hosted the Emporia State Hornets looking to bounce back after their loss to Washburn on Thursday night inside Fugate Gymnasium. Unfortunately for the Jets, Emporia State took the lead early and would not look back as the Hornets defeated the Jets 89-59.
Emporia State (8-7,8-7) would start the game on a 10-2 run before a couple free throws by
Ian Lee would stop the Hornets run a little under four minutes into the contest. After back to back baskets by
DeAndre Johnson cut the Emporia State lead to two, 10-8 with just over thirteen minutes left to play in the opening half, the Hornets would close out the half on a 30-15 run to take a 17 point lead into the intermission.
The Hornets would come out in the second half and continue to control the contest as they would outscore the Jets 49-36 and push their lead to as many as 33 points on their way to a 89-59 victory over the Jets.
Newman (2-11, 2-11) shot 22-59 from the floor for 37.3 percent, 6-22 from three for 27.3 percent and 9-10 from the free throw line for 90.0 percent. While Emporia State shot 37-61 for 60.7 percent, and 6-23 from 3 for 26.1 percent. The Jets were out-rebounded the Hornets by 4, 34-30.
Tyjil Hereford led the Jets in scoring with a career high 15 points and 3 rebounds.
Branden Bunn add in 14 points for Newman
