WICHITA, KS - Newman hosted the #3 ranked Emporia State Hornets to Wilkins Field Sunday afternoon. The Jets matched the Hornets speed and size with strength keeping the Hornets at bay for the majority of the match. Ultimately, the Hornets survived late pushes by Newman with a 2-1 victory.
The scoring for ESU started early in half number 1 with a goal by Aislinn Hughes at 9:15. The score remained the same through the remaining 35 minutes of the opening half.
The second half saw more aggression from Newman's back line. The Jets were bolstered by goalkeeper
Jackie Lari and her 11 saves. Newman pressured the Hornets with 4 shots on goal in the second half after none to open the game.
Another controversial officiating decision put the Jets on the wrong end of the referee's discretion as an offside against the Jets was not initially called until after the Jets buried a rebound from a
Makenzie Shay shot. The referees' conference wiped the potential game tying goal off the board at 51:49.
Before Newman could strike, the Hornets took a 2-0 lead. Shortly after,
Jay Holmes' resilient bunch put away their first goal of the match when
Jalyn McClean finished off a brilliant touch from
Jordan Ashworth.
The Jets have gone through this kind of match seemingly every time out. Being one goal away every time is frustrating for this bunch, but what they can hang their hats on is that as a team Newman is right in the action with the nation's best.
Up next Newman will look to pull out a victory against the Griffons of Missouri Western on Friday, October 22nd at 7 PM in St. Joseph, Missouri.
