Jets tame the Lions in 4 sets

WICHITA, KS - Newman welcomed a struggling Missouri Southern State team to Fugate Gymnasium Tuesday night.  The Jets returned to their winning ways after a couple difficult losses last week in MIAA play.

Newman won in four sets over the MSSU Lions.  Jose Lugo's team advanced to 8-10, 4-8 MIAA while the Lions dropped another MIAA contest and fell to 3-18 overall.

The Jets brought their usual high energy in set 1, taking the opening set 25-19.  The usual suspects for Newman joined in the action with Riley Daugherty and Salome Romp leading the kill charge with 15 and 14 kills respectively.

Newman faltered in set 2 dropping a 25-23 decision that tied the match at a set a piece.  Missouri Southern hung with the Jets by tallying 8 blocks and 6 aces throughout the match.  The Lions were helped with 6 kills by their setter Sophie Mader, who also amassed 34 assists.

The Jets flipped the switch in the 3rd set winning 25-23.  The Jets started to see some welcomed help with Abby Borough and Jada Key tallying a pair of blocks while both hit over .340.  Borough had 8 kills while Key had 6 along with a .667 hitting percentage.

Set 4 was the Jets true colors shining through.  Without libero, Paiton Haga, Sophomore Natalie Morales stepped up wearing the opposite color jersey with 14 digs.  She helped by Jenna DeVore who had 13 and Salome Romp with 10 on the back line.  Set 4 was truly the Kaylie Kovach show. however, as Kovach hammered four of her nine total kills in set 4.

The Jets won in four sets Tuesday night and will play their next match in three days as they travel to Fort Hays for their first of two matches on the road.  The next day they will head to Nebraska-Kearney.  Friday's match is set for 6 PM on the 22nd.  Stay tuned to schedule updates at newmanjets.com.
