Warrensburg, Mo. - Newman traveled to face #4 nation ranked Central Missouri on Thursday night to wrap up MIAA play and regular season play for Newman. The Jennies announced to the world they mean business going into the postseason as their 3-0 defeat of the jets led to a regular season MIAA Championship.
With the loss, Newman falls to 9-17, 5-15 MIAA on the year. The Jets finished the season on a 1-7 skid after sitting at 8-10 with the entire season ahead and beginning the year 4-2. The Jets had many welcomed additions including Freshman
Riley Daugherty and Junior
Abby Borough.
As for Thursday night in Warrensburg, Newman did not show its best performance against one of the nation's best. Newman came out in set one and hit nine kills and nine errors.
The Jets were unable to get much rolling until a 5 point scoring run near the end of set two forced teh Jennies to call a timeout. Three kills from
Riley Daugherty played a major role in the Jets' ability to close in on UCM. However, after the timeout, the Jennies put away the Jets for set two and seemingly the match.
Jose Lugo's team was led by Daugherty and
Natalie Morales with 17 digs. Morales took over the libero spot late in the year and played spirited ball all season, just as she did as a DS.
McKinzie Weaver had 15 assists to pace the Jets.
The season did not finish the way the Jets set out for 2021 to play out, however, a lot of growth occurred for this group. Newman will graduate three seniors in
Jenna DeVore,
Imani Jones and
Jada Key, while returning 12 seasoned players in the MIAA.
