ST. PAUL, Minn. - The second game of the Newman trip to St. Paul did not go the Jets' way. The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs bested the Jets 84-58.
The Jets fall to 0-2 on the young season, while the Mustangs pick up their first win in 2021-22. Saturday afternoon's matchup was Newman's first ever against SMSU.
It was Southwest Minnesota State's hot shooting that put the Jets away. The Mustangs shot 56.1% on field goals, 45.5% from 3 and 100% (15-15) at the charity stripe. The Jets were unable to match the Mustangs' size as SMSU scored a staggering 52 points in the paint.
On the other end of the floor, Newman guards found offensive success.
Branden Bunn led all Newman scorers with 18 points. Bunn hit all four of his free throws and went two of four from deep.
Stevie Strong came off the bench and poured 11 points in for the Jets. The true Freshman eclipsed double digit scoring for the first time in his young career.
The Jets will return home to some more familiar ground as they search for their offensive identity. The Jets team has welcomed nine new faces to the mix this year. Newman squares off against Tabor College Thursday night in Fugate Gymnasium.
