WICHITA, Kan. - Newman hosted University of Mary a day after hosting Wayne State in the home opener. The Marauders came to Newman having played 5 games to Newman's just one on the season. U Mary defeated the Jets Sunday afternoon in Fugate Gymnasium 74-52.
The Jets fell behind 5-0 to start the game before Coach
Drew Johnson called a quick timeout to collect the team. After the timeout, Newman went on a 7-0 run taking their first lead of the game on a
Lauryn Dubbert jump shot. The first quarter continued in a back and forth fashion with the Marauders leading by one at the quarter break.
The second and third periods allowed for U Mary to collect their lead and maintain it through the final buzzer. The Marauders benefited from 10 made 3-pointers including 4 from Megan Zander. Zander finished with 18 points leading all scorers.
The Jets struggled finishing their shots against U Mary. Newman shot just 28.8% from the field.
Tiffany Dortland who scored 27 points Saturday afternoon, led the Jets again with 16 points. The Junior added two steals.
Faith Mason-Vestal scored double figures again as well with another 10 points herself.
Lauryn Dubbert added 9 points and 8 boards of the bench for the Jets providing much needed help.
