HAYS, Kan. - Newman finished their non-conference trip to Hays with a matchup with a tournament team from a year ago, St. Cloud State. The Jets were on the wrong end of a 73-59 result Saturday afternoon.
The Jets fall to 0-4 in non-conference play this year. St. Cloud State advances to 1-1 on the young season after falling to Hays the night before.
Early on the Huskies jumped out to a lead with quality transition basketball. St. Cloud finished the night with 19 points off turnovers with 15 points being of the fast break variety.
For Newman, it was a streaky day. The afternoon included scoring runs for the Huskies followed by a run by the Jets. The Jets' closed out the first half with a 9-0 run to cut into the Husky lead.
A cold finish to the third quarter put Newman in a steeper hole than desired, but that did not shut down Coach
Drew Johnson's team. In the 4th, the Jets outscored the Huskies 18-13. The scoring was aided by
Tiffany Dortland hitting three 3's in the final period. Dortland was good on 4 of 9 from range with 6 boards and 15 total points.
Newman bigs had an impressive showing
Faith Mason-Vestal finished with 15 point,
Britney Ho had 11 with 6 rebounds and Freshman
Laura Bello tallied 9 points. Mason-Vestal has begun the 2021-22 campaign with 4 consecutive double figure scoring performances and will look to continue that streak and help lift the Jets into the win column next time out.
Newman's next time out will be Tuesday at 5:30 PM as the Jets welcome Cottey College to Fugate Gymnasium.
